How to create the perfect feature wall in 3 easy steps
1. Choose a focal point for your room.
2. Write down different features that complement your room's current set up.
3. Choose complementary colours and commit to them!
Feature walls, also known as accent walls or statement walls, can make a room come alive! Feature walls can host many features, as the name suggests, like wall murals, interesting paintings, or even something more textile like a faux stony finish. There are a lot of opportunities to find an accent wall in a room but where should you begin?
1. Choose a focal point for your room
The best way to choose a focal point in your room is to simply walk into it and pay attention to where your eyes are drawn to. Don't think about it too hard, and maybe do it a couple of times throughout the day; the wall that your eyes are naturally drawn to can serve as the feature wall of that room.
Choosing an accent wall's focal point is a crucial first step because if you choose the wrong feature wall then what you'll end up doing is creating a wall that diverts attention. With feature walls, we actually want them to complement the rest of the room to usher in an extra wind of intrigue.
2. Write down different features that complement your room's current set up.
Writing down your feature wall ideas is always going to be a good thing. At this step what we want you to do here is to make two columns in your list: your wish list, and wall features that complement your room. The idea here is to compare and contrast different ideas and to get use to the idea that sometimes what you wish for isn't something that's going to work for your accent walls.
For example, you may see on Instagram a feature wall that features some bulkier shelves and looks perfect as a feature bedroom wall. However your feature wall at home already has plenty of furniture surrounding it. In this example, what you wish to achieve isn't necessarily going to work for your bedroom feature wall at home.
3. Choose complementary colours and commit to them!
Complementary colours are absolutely necessary for accent walls to work. We recommend choosing neutral colour schemes unless you are looking to add a pop of colour directly on your feature wall.
Remember: your feature wall is going to be where your eyes are naturally drawn to when you enter the room. So you have to commit to deciding on whether your focal point is going to be the furniture (as supported by the accent wall) or the wall itself (as supported by the furniture nearby). The absolutely worst thing to do in this case is to change your commitment mid-installation. But don't worry, just promise yourself that once you commit to a certain feature wall that you'll see it through to the end; and we have faith that you will!
